Sony sold 13 million PlayStation 5 units in less than a year, posted a record profit
Sony updated its gaming console line years later with the launch of the PlayStation 5. The PS5 was launched in the second half of 2020 but only arrived in India earlier this year. Buyers have struggled to get their hands on the latest gaming console from Sony. The situation is observed not only in India, but also in international markets. The reason for this is the ongoing shortage of chips, coupled with restrictions in various parts of the world. Despite this, Sony has managed to sell over 13 million PS5 units worldwide.
Sony PlayStation 5 selling like hot cakes?
On October 28, the company announced that over 13.4 million Sony PlayStation 5 units have been sold in various parts of the world. Sony claims that the overall results are quite good, despite the ongoing worldwide shortage of semiconductors. Demand for the PS5 is such that Sony has managed to ship over 3.3 units in the last three months alone.
Sony recently announced that it had sold over 10 million PS5 consoles worldwide within nine months of launch. It is not only the most successful, but also the best-selling in the history of Sony.
It’s not just PS5. Sony also announced that the latest generation PS4 has gained more than 2,000 buyers in the past three months, while the company sold more than 1.5 million units of the console in 2020. Overall, the PS4 has been purchased by over 116.4 million customers. The recent spike in demand could be due to the unavailability of the PS5 coupled with the PS4’s lower price tag. During the pandemic, people have also shown additional interest in gaming by working from home.
The company also announced that it has made significant profits by selling PC games. According to a GizChina report, Sony’s gaming division generated about ¥645.4 billion or US$5.68 billion in revenue, with an operating income of ¥82.7 billion or US$728,330,000.
