2D fighting game Project L: Riot Games will be based on a free model

Riot Games does not intend to sell a paid version of the fighting game in the League of Legends universe.

“Last November we released a report showcasing some of the game’s core concepts and our new art style. To be honest, showing the game this early was a little scary, and we’re grateful that so many of you are so excited about Project L. Your feedback and enthusiasm has convinced us that we’re moving in the right direction. In this new update, I’ll take you through what’s been happening with the team over the past few months and what’s coming next,” says Tom Cannon, Senior Director and Executive Producer of Project L at Riot Games.

“Last time I said that we have improved our gameplay, turning it into a help-based fighting game with two champions in the team. We are now finalizing the core mechanics and most of the team has moved on to creating champions or building game features like competitive play and our social systems.

We want you to be able to play wherever you live, whatever your skill level and how much money you can spend on the game. So I’m happy to confirm that Project L will be free to play. If you’ve ever played Riot Games games, this probably won’t come as a surprise. One of our goals is to remove as many barriers as possible that prevent you from enjoying Project L.

He concludes the new Project L dev diary by saying, “Our team is made up of fighting game veterans and people who care about serving the fighting game community. And we work with one approach, if we don’t like it, we won’t. When it comes to monetization, we promise to respect both your time and your wallet. That’s all for now, but I’ll be back later this year with another update.”
