9 Fixes: Apple Pencil Not Working

The Apple Pencil defines the experience of drawing, taking notes, and annotating documents. All are pixelated and accurate, with no noticeable lag, no tilt or pressure sensitivity, and support for palm rejection.

Reasons why Apple Pencil might not work

1. Restart your iPad

Another simple solution to the problem of Apple Pencil not working on the device is to restart them, especially if wireless devices are the culprit. A quick reboot can fix connection issues faster than you think.

  • The Home button and the Sleep/Wake (On/Off) buttons must be pressed at the same time.
  • Hold them down even after the screen turns off.
  • Hold them down until the Apple logo appears.

2. Check your battery and make sure your Apple Pencil is charged

Apple Pencil has a built-in rechargeable battery that works via Bluetooth. The battery in your Apple Pencil can run out if it’s not working, so charge your Apple Pencil.

  • You must add the Battery widget to your iPad’s home screen to see your Apple Pencil’s battery level.
  • Remove the cap from the back of the first generation Apple Pencil and plug it into the Lightning port on iPad to charge it.
  • You must attach the second-generation Apple Pencil to the right side of the iPad so it can attach magnetically and charge wirelessly.

3. Reconnect your Apple Pencil

You must follow the proper procedures to connect your Apple Pencil to your iPad. Procedures differ between the two generations of Apple Pencil.

  • Go to “Bluetooth Settings”on iPad to enable Bluetooth.
  • The Bluetooth switch must be turned on.
  • Remove the cap from the first generation Apple Pencil and insert it into the Lightning port on your iPad.
  • Attach the 2nd generation Apple Pencil to the side of your iPad using a magnet.
  • A dialog box for Bluetooth pairing will appear. If this is your first time connecting your Apple Pencil to your iPad, select Pair.
  • The list of Bluetooth devices in “Bluetooth Settings”will include the Apple Pencil.

4. Check Apple Pencil Compatibility

The Apple Pencil may not be compatible with your iPad. The first generation Apple Pencil is not supported on devices after it, and the Apple Pencil Gen 2 is not backwards compatible.

If you recently bought an Apple Pencil and it’s not compatible with your iPad, send it in as soon as possible and get a compatible model instead. Apple Pencil comes with two generations of Apple Pencil 1st Generation and Apple Pencil 2.

5. Make sure the Apple Pencil tip (tip) is properly attached

Your Apple Pencil pen can wear out over time and need to be replaced. Thus, the tip of the apple pencil comes off. Every Apple Pencil comes with a spare nib.

It can be replaced and the Apple Pencil not working problem will be fixed if the Apple Pencil is not working. A loose pencil tip prevents iPad and Apple Pencil from interacting properly.

Make sure the tip on your Apple Pencil is tight. Just turn the tip clockwise to tighten it. Just make sure it’s turned on and well secured.

6. Activate Bluetooth

For the Apple Pencil to work, your iPad must have a Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth probably needs to be reset if your Apple Pencil doesn’t show up in the list of devices under the Battery widget.

  • Tap “Settings”on iPad.
  • Click Bluetooth. If Bluetooth isn’t already on, tap the switch to turn it on.
  • Reconnect iPad. You should see the Apple Pencil under My Devices.
  • Restart your iPad and try again if Bluetooth won’t turn on or the spin/load icon appears.
  • Check if apple pencil is working again or not.

7. Airplane mode should turn off

Make sure Airplane mode is not active on your iPad Pro. Make sure airplane mode is turned off by pulling the control center off the screen.

  • Open the Settings app, select the first option “Airplane Mode”and toggle it to the gray position.
  • Swipe down from the top right of the iPad screen to access the Control Center.
  • You must touch and hold the network card to see the airplane icon.

8. Hard reset your iPad

When you perform a hard reset, your device is forced to reset, not automatically. Your data will not be erased so you don’t have to worry about losing it.

After a hard reset, re-pairing your Apple Pencil with your iPad may help you identify the issue.

  • To begin, press the volume up button and then release it. After that, press the volume down button and then release it.
  • Press and hold the power button on your device while maintaining pressure.
  • Keep holding the power button when you see the Apple logo on the screen.
  • Once your iPad restarts, open the Settings app. Finally, from the options provided, select Bluetooth.
  • Forget about this device after choosing Apple Pencil.
  • After that, insert your iPad into the Apple Pencil slot and pair your gadget again.

9. Time to Contact Apple Support

If your Apple Pencil has a manufacturing defect and is covered by AppleCare or AppleCare+, you can replace it for free. However, contact Apple Support or take it to your nearest authorized Apple Store.

Take your iPad and Apple Pencil to any Apple Store to have them checked for hardware or software issues, if nothing else happens.
