Starlink launches its offshore boat service: $10,000 for equipment and $5,000 per month.

Just days after receiving FCC clearance to provide its vehicle services, Starlink launched a boat version. The ISP explains via satellite that Starlink Maritime can offer download speeds of 350Mbps on the high seas. Unfortunately, the service is very expensive. The equipment alone requires $10,000, which must be paid in advance.

The service itself costs $5,000 per month, but users can pause it when they’re not using it. The month that has begun, however, is payable in full. By comparison, Starlink’s land-based hardware costs just $599 for a $110-per-month subscription.

SpaceX boss Elon Musk explained on Twitter that Starlink’s marine antenna is different from the land-based version. These are “dual high-performance terminals”capable of communicating in rough seas and severe storms. These terminals are also designed to withstand “relentless sea water, strong winds and storms”. Elon Musk also said that SpaceX is paying $150,000 a month for “much worse communications”on their ships.

The Starlink Maritime page also mentions that the service allows connections from very remote waters around the world, but coverage is still limited. The system currently only operates off the coast of the US (not Alaska), Europe (excluding most of Norway, Sweden and Finland), Australia, Brazil, Chile and most of southern Australia and New Zealand. Starlink is expected to increase coverage in the last quarter of 2022 and next year.

SpaceX has long wanted to connect mobile vehicles to its Starlink network and even showed off its system for ships and aircraft in 2021. meet the growing demand from users who need connectivity on the go.”
