There will be no new Macs in 2022: MacBook Pro M2 will be released in early 2023, Mac mini M2 is in development
There will be no new Macs in 2022. But in early 2023, Apple should release new M2-powered MacBook Pro laptops and update its other computers.
- What is happening? Apple’s holiday lineup is reportedly already set, and there won’t be any new Macs this year. Bloomberg tells us what new Macs to expect in early 2023.
- Why care? Because some Macs, including the MacBook Pro and Mac mini line, still run on the old Apple M1 chip.
- What to do? Enjoy your life. Since there won’t be any new Macs until 2023, your wallet will thank you and you can save your kidney a little longer.
MacBook Pro M2 coming early 2023
In his Bloomberg Power On newsletter, journalist Mark Gurman says that Apple is preparing to release new Macs early next year. With October ending in less than 24 hours and no Apple media events in sight, it really looks more like we shouldn’t expect any Mac news until 2023.
While Apple intended to release the new MacBook Pros as early as this fall, the company’s internal plans, confirmed by public comments last week, closed the door on that. During the company’s quarterly reporting on Thursday, CEO Tim Cook referred to the product line as a “kit”for this holiday season.
Things get even more interesting when Gurman describes what new Macs to expect in 2023, such as 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros based on Apple’s upcoming M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. According to Gurman, M2 Max will increase the number of processing cores from ten to twelve, and the number of graphics cores will increase from 32 to 38.
Also in development is a new Mac mini.
What about M2 Mac mini?
The current M1 Mac mini was one of Apple’s first silicon systems in 2020. The smallest Mac in Apple’s offering is ripe for a refresh: Apple is testing both the M2 version and a more powerful variant based on the M2 Pro chip with more CPU and GPU. kernels. While Apple continues to offer a $1,099 Intel-based model, Gurman says the company should discontinue the machine as soon as the M2 Mac mini arrives.
Arrival in the first quarter of 2023
Gurman isn’t very clear on when Apple might release these new Macs, other than he expects the new machines to arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2024 because Apple rarely releases new computers in January or February.
For example, the Mac Studio desktop was introduced in March 2022.
Gurman says the new Mac releases are tied to macOS Ventura 13.3 and iOS 16.3, due out “from early February to early March.”Prior to that, however, Apple will release iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 “around mid-December.”
Decline in Mac Sales This Holiday Quarter
If you own Apple stock, you should consider this rumor. If Apple does have fewer new devices to sell this holiday quarter, it could hurt earnings. Of course, Apple’s forecast for the holiday quarter is about the Mac situation.
“We have a very difficult year-to-date comparison, benefiting from the launch and resulting channel filling of our newly redesigned MacBook Pro with the M1,” Luca Maestri, Apple’s chief financial officer, said during a recent earnings call.
“Therefore, we expect Mac revenue to decline substantially year-over-year during the December quarter.”
