Apple releases iOS 15.7.1 with security fixes for anyone who hasn’t updated to iOS 16
On Thursday, Apple released iOS and iPadOS 15.7.1 with bug fixes and security improvements for iPhones and iPads that have not yet been updated to the new iOS and iPadOS 16 mobile operating system released this fall.
The changelog for iOS and iPadOS 15.7.1 isn’t particularly detailed, just laying out the standard: “This update contains important security updates and is recommended for all users.”
For what it’s worth, Apple released iOS and iPadOS 16.1 on Monday, which included a host of security fixes, including a fix for a zero-day attack that may have been heavily exploited in the wild. iOS and iPadOS 15.7.1 certainly address this same security issue for those who don’t update to iOS or iPadOS 16 for whatever reason. All of the security fixes in today’s update are posted on the corresponding Apple security webpage.
If you are using an iOS or iPadOS 15 device and intend to wait for the jailbreak, it is recommended to use the lowest firmware. Of course, anyone using iOS or iPadOS 15.7 or earlier and not waiting for a jailbreak can upgrade to iOS or iPadOS 15.7.1 for free, or to iOS or iPadOS 16.1 if their device supports it, whichever of the two. seems more attractive..
It’s worth adding that some devices are stuck on iOS 15 indefinitely, like the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, as they can’t be updated to the newer iOS 16 mobile operating system. With that in mind, iOS 15.7. 1 is now the latest firmware that these devices can now run.
If you want to update to iOS or iPadOS 15.7.1, there are two ways to do so: 1) OTA (over-the-air) by going to Settings > General > Software Update; or 2) via Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows by checking for updates while the device in question is connected via a USB to Lightning cable.
