Palera1n jailbreak may soon get iOS 16 support on A9-A11 devices

It appears that the palera1n team is looking into adding iOS and iPadOS 16 support to their Palara1n jailbreak tool based on the checkm8 bootrom exploit for A9-A11 devices.

In a tweet posted this Thanksgiving Thursday, the palera1n team said that support for iOS and iPadOS 16 is coming soon, albeit with a few annoying caveats, especially around the use of a passcode.

Due to internal changes to SEP, users of A10-A11 devices will have no choice but to fully restore their device if they have ever set a password on the device before. Moreover, jailbreak tweaks like checkl0ck will most likely not be able to enable Face ID on iOS 16.

The palera1n team notes that this caveat does not affect users of A9-A9X devices, which is already the case for other jailbreaks, including checkra1n, so this is not surprising.

Theoretically, A10-A10X devices could unlock the l passcode feature, but this would require a SEP exploit such as blackbird and it is not known if it will ever be implemented.

The announcement comes a day after Palera1n team lead developer @itsnebulalol shared on Twitter a teaser injection of the tweak working on iOS 16 devices:

Despite the news, it’s worth noting that iPhone XS and newer devices still don’t have a jailbreak for iOS or iPadOS 15 or 16. The reason for palera1n’s existence is that the venerable checkm8 exploit is based on hardware and thus cannot be hacked.. fixed by Apple via software update.

While palera1n is only for developers, more and more avid jailbreakers seem to be jumping on board as the Odyssey Team’s Cheyote jailbreak still hasn’t seen the light of day and probably won’t be released in 2022.
