Netflix plans to add at least 40 new titles to its mobile game catalog this year.
Netflix plans to release at least 40 new games this year. Everyone will find something for themselves to attract even more subscribers.
Netflix has no plans to slow down when it comes to gaming, and the platform wants its over 230 million subscribers to have at least one game they love. The streaming giant’s mobile game catalog currently stands at 55 titles following the recent additions of Valiant Hearts: Coming Home and Highwater. And during 2023 there will be many more, Netflix plans about 40.
Netflix plans to release at least 40 new games this year
The company has already revealed some of these upcoming games, including Terra Nil (March 28) and Paper Trail. Netflix also signed an agreement with Ubisoft for three exclusive games. The second of them, after Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, will appear on April 18: this is Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace. In the same vein as The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.
Later, we will also see a sequel to Netflix’s most popular game to date, Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game, based on the reality show of the same name. Netflix is working with developer Nanobit on a sequel.
Monument Valley will appear even later. Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 will be available to Netflix subscribers at no additional cost in 2024. These games are currently available on Apple Arcade. And they will stay there when they are available on Netflix next year. That being said, developer Ustwo has hinted that a new Monument Valley game is in development as part of this deal with Netflix.
The box also includes a game based on a yet-to-be-announced Netflix license. Developer Vainglory Super Evil Megacorp is working on an exclusive game. We should find out more in the coming weeks/months. Lynn Lumbe, VP of External Games, stated on the occasion that it was a “big bet”and a “transmedia game”.
In total, Netflix has about 70 games in development with partners and 16 in its own studios. Most in-house games are still in their infancy, although Night School Studio’s Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is slated for release this year. In any case, Netflix promised to release new games every month until the end of 2023, and there will be something for everyone.
Everyone will find something for themselves to attract even more subscribers
Lynn Lumbe said that since Netflix’s video game adventures began in 2021, the company has learned that gamers are drawn to three different experiences: games well known elsewhere, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Revenge and Shredder’s immortality; games that encourage everyday play such as Solitaire and Knittens; and games based on their own series and films, such as Stranger Things.
Given Netflix’s ambition to become a world-class publisher, we hope the company doesn’t stop at these three. In any case, everything already looks very promising. For example, Poinpy, a small platform game that doesn’t fit into any of those categories, was clearly my favorite of 2022.
Netflix has repeatedly stated that it wants to get into cloud gaming. Therefore, it may happen that subscribers will eventually be able to play from anywhere. But for now, the focus is on mobile devices. And the platform intends to make sure that everyone knows that there are great games to test on the subscription!
