How to share a screen in Discord
Discord is the most popular online communication platform for digital developers, influencers, and especially gamers. It has over 250 million active users. That’s because it’s free, very user-friendly, and almost never runs into problems.
You can set up your own private Discord servers for your team. To spice things up, you can even add bots to them. Voice and video calls are available on these servers. Did you know that on the server you are on you can share your screen? Members of your server can watch your screen in real time.
This feature comes with the main Discord app and is completely free. This article will tell you why and how to start streaming and share your screen on Discord.

What are the benefits of screen sharing?

Ten people, including you, can share your screen at the same time on the Discord server. There are a few things you need to do before sharing your screen on a Discord server.
1. Voice and Video Settings for Screen Sharing in Discord
Before you can provide the best output on Discord screen sharing, certain settings need to be applied. This also applies to video chat/video call and voice call through the app.
- Open user settings. It’s the gear icon at the bottom left of the window, next to your username and tag.
- On the left side of the screen, you will see a list of options in sections. In the Application Settings section, click Voice and Video.
- In the voice settings, you can check the voice input and output. You may have sound problems if the settings are incorrect. Run a microphone test if you like. Especially when you have two or more displays, this is where you will have to troubleshoot the audio issues that will inevitably arise. You can also set up a trigger for voice input.
- In the video settings, you can adjust the webcam settings if you want to be in the frame. You can even run a test if you like.
- Other options such as noise reduction, echo cancellation, attenuation, and voice diagnostics are found in the same section. You can change them if you like.
2. Screen Sharing on Discord Voice Channel Server
It’s easy to share your screen on a Discord server. Do it
- You must be a member of the Discord server. Ask your friends to invite you or click on the invite link.
- Join the server’s voice channel. On the left you will see text and voice channels. Discord servers can have more than one channel. Tap on the voice channel you want to share your screen with. This will add you to that voice channel.
- Once you join it, you will see a Screen button on the bottom left side of the window. It’s the “Share Your Screen”option. Click here.
- Select the app or screen you want to cast to your server from the window that appears.
- After you select an app or screen to share, you’ll see additional settings that you need to set up before you can start streaming to your server. You must select the resolution and frame rate of the live stream. You need Discord nitro to stream at better resolutions and higher frame rates.
- When you’re done, click the Go Live button.
You will start the live broadcast without delay. You can configure your Discord screen sharing settings while screen sharing.
Even when you share your screen video on a Discord server, you can make multiple changes to your stream without interrupting it. You can even make a voice or video call to your friends on the server without stopping your Discord screen sharing. Once you start the screenshare, you will notice four icons that appear when you hover over the Discord window.
Click on the downward arrow on the monitor icon with a cross inside. You will see the flow setting. You can customize them the way you want.
4. Customize voice and sound during a call
You can also set up voice input and voice output on the Discord screen while remaining in the video stream. Click on the small down arrow on the microphone icon.
From the pop-up menu, you can choose which microphone will be used to receive vocal inputs and where the output should be received. Select the Voice Settings option if you want to change the audio setting. The Voice and Video window opens. Screen sharing will not be interrupted.
5. Additional Steps for Discord in a Web Browser
There are a few extra steps you need to take to share your screen in the Discord browser client because the Discord website is different from the app.
- Enable Permissions on Discord
If you want to share your screen through the Discord browser client, you will need to give the site permission to use the microphone and camera in order for them to work properly. Once you click “Allow”in the browser pop-ups, Discord will have access to your microphone and camera.
- Add your friends to the call list.
If you want to start a video chat with multiple people through the Discord site, you have to make friends with them.
- On the main Discord page, click “Friends”. The icon looks like a waving person.
- At the far right of their names, click on the three-dot menu and select the Start Video Call button.
- If you sent a message to this friend, you can start a video call through the conversation you had. The option to start a video call is at the top right of the browser window.
- Use Discord through the iOS or Android mobile app. You can start a video call by tapping the three dots icon in a server conversation or text channel and selecting “Start Video Call”to start a video chat.
There are some valuable features that you might need when sharing your screen.
- Screen extension
You will see an arrow on the left when you are in a video chat. Click on this arrow to expand the screen to the highest value you have set in Discord.
- Switching from a video call to screen sharing
You can easily switch from chatting with your video to screen sharing at any time during a call by clicking on the monitor icon with an arrow in the middle. It’s the “Share Your Screen”button.
- Leave the chat
You can leave a video or audio call at any time. You must click on the leave call button.
- Mute
Users can turn off their own vocals and the voice of others if they wish. Press the microphone button if you want to mute your sound. Press again to unmute.
- Go full screen
The screen can be switched to cover the display completely by simply pressing the full screen button. Press the Esc key to exit full screen mode.
- Fixing a person
Click on a person’s profile picture to pin their screen to the center. Other videos will be sent to the side, and the focus will remain on the one you pinned.
- Switching screens during a live broadcast
Users can switch the apps or displays they want to display while sharing their screen with their server. Switching the screen does not interrupt the exchange.
Screen recording and sharing
Users can record their screens and share them with people. This can be done using third party applications. If you have an Nvidia GeForce (GTX or RTX) graphics card, you can launch the Geforce Experience overlay and record your screen at native resolution.
Or you can even use the Xbox Game Bar with the Windows desktop.
