Xiaomi patents full-screen fingerprint scanner technology for smartphones of the future
Xiaomi seems to be working not only on a lot of new devices, but also on the technologies that will be used in them. For example, we’ve heard a lot about the under-display fingerprint scanner of the Redmi K50 and Xiaomi is making sure it keeps up with innovation in no way. According to the latest report, Xiaomi recently received a patent for a new fingerprint scanning technology.
This new technology allows Xiaomi to place the fingerprint scanner on any part of the screen. Once this fingerprint scanner hits phones, users will be able to unlock the phone even if their finger is incorrectly placed on the under-screen fingerprint scanner.
Xiaomi has filed a patent for a full-screen fingerprint scanner
Xiaomi full screen fingerprint scanner – how it works
The Xiaomi patent points to an array of infrared LED light transmitters under the capacitive touchscreen layer and above the standard AMOLED display. Above the infrared LED light transmitter layer, there will be infrared light receivers. When a user touches the screen to scan a fingerprint, the capacitive touch screen registers the touch along with the position and shape of the fingertip.
An array of infrared LED transmitters emits light according to the shape and position of the fingertip. The infrared light is reflected back, reaching the infrared light receivers. The infrared light speed data is then used to display the outline of the fingerprint and compared with the stored fingerprint data to verify the user’s identity.
If Xiaomi implements this on their smartphones, users will no longer need to place their thumb in a predefined position to unlock the phone. They can simply enroll their fingerprint and unlock their devices by checking the fingerprint anywhere on the screen. Not only Xiaomi is working on this technology.
Back in August 2020, Huawe filed a patent for full-screen fingerprint scanning technology. However, the company has yet to announce the technology. While fans are excited about the Redmi K50, which may come with an under-display fingerprint scanner, we may have to wait a bit for the latest technology to arrive on the Xiaomi device.
