Spin-off NieR: Automata will be released early next year. An adaptation called NieR: Automata Version 1.1a, more specifically, will debut in January 2023. NieR creator Yoko Taro shared the information during the Aniplex online festival that took place over the weekend, and at the same time revealed that the anime story will be different from the 2017 game.

Both will have the same promise anyway. NieR: Automata begins on a shattered Earth with war-implanted human-made androids. “NieR: Automata is a story that we created as a game by copying it, as it would not make an interesting story for an anime,” Yoko Taro explained at the conference.

The plot will be different from the 2017 game

Studio A-1 Pictures, known for such works as “Erased”, “From the New World”and “Your Lies in April”, will produce the project, and Ryoji Masyama will co-write the script with Yoko Taro. To Ryoji Masyama’s credit, we could refer to Gurren Lagann or Evangelion 2.0: You’re (Not) Progressing. “I get things done and sometimes break them for [A-1 Pictures], so if anyone is unhappy with [the plot of the anime], it will probably be my fault,” warned Yoko Taro. fans. Since there are so many endings in NieR: Automata, it’s probably a good thing that the anime distances itself from the game.

Details are still thin

At this stage, there is no mention of a possible distribution outside of Japan. That being said, since Sony owns Aniplex and Crunchyroll, there’s a chance the simulcast rights will move to the streaming service. It will be interesting to see if the anime is of real interest for the NieR: Automata license, as the recent Edgerunners on Netflix could be for Cyberpunk 2077. The company hasn’t announced anything about a proper sequel yet, although fans got a mobile spin-off and remaster of the original game last year.
