Don’t fall into this very popular TikTok trap
Don’t fall into this very popular TikTok trap, you will download very dangerous malware.
TikTok broadcasts many trends, more or less ephemeral, more or less dangerous. For you, your device or your data. Lately, you can see users looking naked behind the “highlights” filter, so to speak. The most curious would like to be able to remove this filter and see a naked body behind it. To do this, they download third-party software.
Don’t fall into this very popular TikTok trap
Keep in mind that it is not possible to unfilter a video downloaded from TikTok. Trying to do this is a good way to become a victim of something. Hackers are exploiting this trend to spread a malicious app called “TikTok unfilter”that they claim reveals the nudity of these creators. In fact, it just infects your device with malware.
The scammers are promoting this app in TikTok videos linked to a Discord server called “Space unfilter”. The server then sends you to the GitHub download page. A page that appears to be completely legitimate, but which is just a clone of the official GitHub site created to install the “WASP Stealer”malware.
WASP Stealer is especially dangerous. Once installed on your device, it can copy your banking information from browsers, hijack your Discord credentials, and even steal cryptocurrencies and other locally stored files. Bleeping Computer explains how it works in great detail.
You download a very dangerous malware
According to a report by cybersecurity firm Checkmarx, TikTok has blocked at least two profiles promoting the Space Unfiltered Discord server, but they have already racked up over a million views. At one point, the Discord server even had over 32,000 users, and the TikTok Unfilter repository was even one of the most popular projects on GitHub. The server went down as well, but it’s highly likely that the hackers simply created a new community elsewhere.
Despite the threat of this malware to TikTok users, all this is easy to avoid: do not click on links from creators that promise to show nudity behind filters. TikTok only has one version of a video on its platform, if you apply a filter, it can’t be removed. There is no data that the app cannot return, even if the person was actually naked when it was filmed. This would be a real legal nightmare for TikTok if it were possible.
That being said, if you have ever downloaded such an application, you have probably downloaded malware. Use a secure anti-malware app to delete files, change your passwords everywhere, and closely monitor your Discord profile and bank accounts for suspicious activity, among other things.
