AltStore v1.6.1 is now available to everyone with the 3 app limit removed for MacDirtyCow devices
Earlier today, we talked about a version of AltStore that will remove the three app download limit on MacDirtyCow-vulnerable devices running iOS or iPadOS 14.0-16.1.2. While it was an upcoming feature in beta at the time, it now seems like the update is rolling out to everyone.
In a tweet released on Monday afternoon, the AltStore Twitter account revealed that AltStore version 1.6.1 is being released to everyone with all the changes present in version 1.6.1 beta, which include:
- Downloading more than three applications at the same time with the MacDirtyCow exploit
- New “Clear Cache”button that can delete junk data and free up disk space.
- Fixed crash when viewing sources on iOS 12 devices.
Obviously, being able to use the MacDirtyCow exploit to download more than three apps requires your device to be vulnerable to the MacDirtyCow bug. This means it only works on iOS or iPadOS 14.0-16.1.3. It will not work on iOS or iPadOS 16.2 or later.
To use this feature, you must download the WDBRemoveThreeAppLimit application, which then allows you to download additional applications:
This was followed by a tweet that discussed the new features in more detail:
And here is the clear cache button for those interested:
Installing the update is very easy. Simply open the AltStore app on your iPhone or iPad and click the Update button to start downloading and installing the latest build:
All users are encouraged to keep AltStore up to date, not only to prevent interruptions, but also to take advantage of the latest features.
Downloading apps this way allows users to bypass the Apple App Store and install any file. the ipa they want, albeit with a seven day signature period, that uses their Apple ID as a free developer account to authorize sideloading.
