Before playing Groot and driving cars through skyscrapers, one of Vin Diesel’s most popular roles was as Dick Riddick in the 2000s film Pitch Black. that the saga came to an end with Riddick in 2013, but once the iconic Fast & Furious license comes to an end, Vin Diesel looks set to return to space.

After all, according to Deadline, a new film is in development under the license of The Chronicles of Riddick. The project will be called Riddick: Fury and will bring together Vin Diesel and director/screenwriter David Twohy, who wrote and directed the previous two films. The original Pitch Black was co-written by Ken and Jim Wheats. In a press release, David Twoey said it was time to “fulfill [fans’] requests for Riddick: Furya. […] This new big screen event will mark Riddick’s return to his land where we can finally explore Riddick’s origins.”
So, according to the first elements of the script, in the movie, Riddick will return to his home planet, Furya, devastated by the Necromongers, those religious fanatics who were the big bad guys in The Chronicles of Riddick. This movie ended with Riddick as their leader, but the Riddick movie is different from that ending. There the Necromongers are trying to kill him because he didn’t take the oath. Now on his home planet, Riddick finds the survivors of his kind who have rebelled against a new enemy. It’s time for him to do what he does best.
The start of an expansion for this franchise?
The Chronicles of Riddick license also gave life to two video games, a comic book and an animated series. Considering how the popularity of the Fast and the Furious saga has grown and how easily the actor gets involved in various media and projects, it would not be surprising if Riddick: The Fury became a springboard for franchise expansion.
