Samsung is developing a fingerprint sensor for payment cards

Samsung is developing a system with a fingerprint scanner for cards. For payment cards, of course, but not only.

Our debit and credit cards most often have a PIN, so when you buy something, you can enter this PIN to verify your identity. At the same time, these are your settings, the need to enter this PIN exists only for transactions above a certain amount. And if you use the contactless payment option, then the pin code is sometimes not even requested (this is the whole point of this option). Today, all this needs to be made safer.

But in these convenient situations, someone who stole your card can use it to buy relatively low value items to avoid having to enter a PIN they don’t know. And a thief can take a large amount out of your bank account with many small transactions before you know it. This is something Samsung hopes to change. The South Korean giant has unveiled a new fingerprint sensor that can be used in payment cards.

For payment cards, of course, but not only

According to Kenny Khan, Vice President of System LSI Marketing at Samsung Electronics, “The S3B512C combines a fingerprint sensor, Secure Element (SE) and Secure Processor, adding an extra layer of authentication and security to payment cards. The S3B512C is primarily conceived and designed for payment cards, but it can be used in cards that require a high level of authentication, such as student or employee identity verification, some kind of subscription, or building access.”

This means that instead of checking the card, the system checks the user at the same time, which improves overall security. Unfortunately, the company does not specify that we will be able to see these sensors integrated into our cards, but we must admit that this is a very good idea. Hope it happens soon!
