Sony to provide backwards compatibility once PS3 games are listed on the PS5 store
It appears that some PS3 games have made their way to the PS5 store, further fueling rumors that the new console may be getting new backwards compatibility features. Backward compatibility is one of the most common criticisms of the new PlayStation console.
Jordan Middler of VGC News spotted the PS3 game Dead or Alive in the PS5 store. Generally, PS3 games in the store direct players to PS Now, but it looks like the store list now also shows the price instead, which is very unusual.
Last week saw a major change in the PS5 backwards compatibility department as PlayStation’s Mark Cerny filed a new patent, apparently hinting that the next-gen console would be backwards compatible soon.
PS3 games have appeared in the PS5 store, can the console get backwards compatible soon?
The current PS5 backwards compatibility only applies to PS4, which means that PS3 games cannot currently be played on the console. On the other hand, the Xbox was much less restrictive, allowing players to play games from the original Xbox on the shiny new X/S series.
Other users have noticed similar listings in the Store, and some have claimed to have seen games like Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and even The Two Thrones. While Sony hasn’t confirmed any progress on the console’s backwards compatibility features, the announcement may be imminent.
At the same time, Sony appears to be in the process of merging PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now to provide players with an entirely new offering. According to reports, Sony is currently working on a subscription service similar to Xbox Game Pass to compete with the extremely popular service.
