Amazon is reportedly working on a Tomb Raider TV series. The giant would even offer the services of Phoebe Waller Bridge (Fleabag).
Hollywood doesn’t seem to be done with the Tomb Raider license yet. And this time it could be for the small screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon is reportedly preparing a Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge – Fleabag – executive producer and writer, of course. No one knows yet who will be the star of this new film adaptation, but don’t count on movie stars such as Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. The series is still in development.

Contacting the media about this, Amazon declined to comment. However, such a collaboration would not be really surprising. Indeed, Amazon is publishing the next Tomb Raider game, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge has signed a three-year contract with Amazon, including projects such as an adaptation of the novel Sign Here. Sources at The Reporter say Amazon “aggressively”signed an extension to that deal late last year.

This rumor comes as video game adaptations for the small screen are clearly gaining momentum. HBO’s The Last of Us has already become such a hit that the series has been renewed for a second season. Sony, for its part, is preparing adaptations of God of War, Gran Turismo and Horizon for Netflix and Prime Video. The Tomb Raider series will certainly solidify Amazon’s catalog of video game adaptations and help it compete with competitors like Netflix, a platform that has already made real headway like Arcane taken from League of Legends.
Amazon has never gone there, so to speak, on the back of the spoon to afford potential blockbusters. The company has reportedly spent at least $1 billion on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, for example. The Tomb Raider series probably shouldn’t cost that much, but Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s involvement suggests the American giant is ready to make the best of it. Last year, Amazon struggled to reach the top of the streaming charts. Faced with Netflix’s success with Stranger Things, this could allow it to be better armed.
