Sorare: a new sales record with Erling Haaland’s unique card

But how far will NFTs go? Just a fad or a real trend gone? It’s hard to say at the moment. However, today some non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are traded for gold, earning and ruining real fortunes. A striking example is the French platform Sorare, which offers NFTs in the world of football (mostly). Today it sets a new sales record thanks to Erling Haaland.

After a very good fundraiser and a valuation of over 3 billion euros, the French unicorn continues to make headlines. And certainly not the sale of one card of Erling Haaland, currently a striker of Borussia Dortmund, for 265 ETH (or 613,844 euros at the time of writing), which suggests otherwise.

Sorare’s principle is simple. The platform offers a fantasy football game on the blockchain. Each season and for each player present, 1111 cards are given out in the form of NFTs, with different levels of rarity: the most common at 1000 copies, rare at 100, super rare at 10 and unique. With these cards, managers can participate in championships and win prizes (ETH currency and/or cards). Like any NFT, cards can also be resold.

A few months ago, another iconic football player, namely Cristiano Ronaldo, was made happy by Sorare by selling his unique card for at least $400,000 through the traditional Bonhams auction house. For the Erling Haaland card, the auction was conducted directly on Sorare and the last few minutes have been crazy: the price has gone from 159 ETH to 265 ETH very, very quickly. It is today that the manager of Zima Blue holds the most expensive card in the history of Sorare in his collection.

While football is the focus of Sorare today, the platform has been working on introducing other sports for several months.
