Sony introduces AI in Gran Turismo 7. Can you take on the GT Sophy?

This Tuesday, starting at 10:00 am, players from all over the world will be able to show off their racing skills against the Sony GT Sophy AI, the artificial intelligence that is already afflicting many Gran Turismo 7 pro players. This new option is coming with the rev1.29 update on PlayStation 5. Once the update is installed, players will be able to line up in the “Gran Turismo Sophy Race Together”mode and face four different GT Sophy opponents, each with their own car, in a series of four circuits categorized by difficulty.

“The difference [between racers] is that it’s basically the power you have compared to other cars on the track,”Michael Spranger told Engadget. “You have different performance levels. At the entry level, you have a much more powerful car – in the same class, but you go much faster [than the competition].” This gap narrows as difficulty increases until you get a GT Sophy in a car with similar specs.

The Sophie you fight is the same Sophie who beats the pros,” says Peter Wurman. The artificial intelligence was not modified prior to release. “The power that the player has is the advantage of the car that helps to be competitive, but otherwise the GT Sophy is the same. A very, very good driver.”

Please note that this event is limited in time. Racing against the GT Sophy will only be available until the end of March. The Sony IA team is restricting the event for technical reasons, but “mostly because it’s a new game mode and we want to try it out, get feedback and repeat it all,”said Peter Wurman. The team does not have details about the continuation of this project.

“We believe this technology has great potential to improve the user experience in different types of games,” he continues. He adds that AIs like GT Sophy can do a lot in terms of player interaction as well as playing an expanded role. This “technology is critical to content creation itself. They will access these diagrams, get very detailed information to create an environment, and more generally, one can imagine that AI has a huge potential to help in many of these processes.

Only players who have reached Collector Level 6 will be able to compete against Gran Turismo’s AI.
