STAR SPHERE: Nanosatellite Creative Space Experience

Sony wants to bring the experience to more than just astronauts through technology and entertainment.

In collaboration with the University of Tokyo and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Sony is preparing for the first time to unveil a nanosatellite model with a Sony camera, which is scheduled to launch later this year. Using the shooting simulator, users will be able to control the satellite to photograph the earth and stars exactly the way they want. STAR SPHERE is committed to innovation to offer inspiring experiences, enriching people’s view of space, and will engage in co-creation with various creators and partners in the field.

A spokesman for Sony said: “Seeing our blue Earth from space and contemplating the countless stars was once reserved for astronauts. By challenging new frontiers with technology, we are breaking new ground in space to inspire exploration and deliver inspiring space experiences around the world through entertainment. Through the unique imagination of space, we will be able to connect and create together more freely than ever before. This new perspective has the power to change the human mind and unleash endless ideas and creativity.”

STAR SPHERE missions

  • Development of the first satellite of the STAR SPHERE project: a high degree of flexibility in the operation of the camera, full-format, integration with the survey simulator and real-time operation
  • Using the shooting simulator will allow you to intuitively perform tasks such as setting up shooting sequences and using the satellite to capture the Earth, star panoramas and many other elements. Thanks to this, users will even be able to experience completely unexpected views of the Earth and space.
  • Project planning, proof of concept, and partnerships in various fields to create inspiring space experiences.
  • Explore the many possibilities: new media art, documentary production, science museums and public institutions, promotion and advertising, education and human resource development, tourism and travel, exhibition halls and amusement parks.

Sony said in a statement: “Our main focus is Japan. We are currently collaborating with artists and working on proof of concept in education and entertainment using cutting edge technology.”
