TCL Introduces Very Attractive XR Connected Glasses Concept

TCL presents a very attractive concept of XR connected glasses. Let’s hope the built-in screen really comes in handy.

TCL has established itself as a TV manufacturer. It really comes as no surprise that the company is entering the augmented reality (XR) glasses market. At the same time, the prototype, shown most recently at CES 2022, looks surprisingly successful. Even very attractive.

Let’s be extremely honest and specific from the start. At CES, only the industrial part was revealed. TCL is doing its best to showcase the fully functional version at MWC, which will be held at the end of February. Then we will be able to judge the success of the project by the form.

The technological base on which these glasses are based is very similar to that of other products already announced, such as Oppo Air Glass. Some of the similarities may be the use of a very small projector with Micro LED and a Snapdragon 4100 chip.

The screen should have a fairly modest capacity for displaying easily visible notifications, directions, and other visual information. These goggles are not designed to replace XR helmets worthy of the name often used by professionals (such as Microsoft HoloLens), but rather intended for use by the general public.

I hope the built-in screen is really useful

If the screen manages to fulfill its role of displaying information, such as a heads-up display (HUD), then it remains to be seen what applications can benefit from this. After all, this is the million dollar question. In addition to mapping applications, we will need to find applications. Otherwise, devices of this type simply will not appear on the market. However, we have to start somewhere, and these TCL glasses could be the first brick in this building.

As is often the case with wearables, getting users to wear these accessories is the hardest part. The design of TCL pleases the eye, the glasses look quite classic. The general public could easily want to try them. And then it will be necessary that the integrated screen provide real added value.
