Amazon completes $8.45 billion acquisition of MGM

Amazon completes its takeover of MGM and, in particular, becomes a co-owner of the James Bond films.

The James Bond films, Rocky and RoboCop, and many others, are now owned by or partly owned by Amazon. The American giant just completed an $8.45 billion takeover of MGM film and television studios.

Amazon completes MGM acquisition

A few days ago, EU antitrust regulators unanimously approved the operation. This determined that there were not too many overlaps between the two companies and that “MGM content cannot be considered mandatory”compared to other studios.

Amazon apparently gave the untouchable Federal Trade Commission, which has analyzed all the ins and outs of this takeover, a mid-March deadline to approve or reject the acquisition. If the commission hadn’t sued by then, Amazon could continue to operate.

and therefore noticeably becomes a co-owner of the James Bond films.

MGM “will complement the work of Prime Video and Amazon Studios to provide consumers with a variety of entertainment options,”Amazon explained in a press release. The studio catalog contains more than 4,000 films and 17,000 series of TV series, the owner of at least 180 Oscars and 100 Emmys. MGM films also include great classics such as Thelma and Louise, The Silence of the Lambs, The Wizard of Oz, The Magnificent Seven and Raging Bull.

Amazon will continue to release James Bond movies in theaters and not just on its Prime Video platform. That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see James Bond reading a Kindle book by the pool in a future film if Eon Productions, another co-owner of the license, agrees to such product placement.

In any case, there’s a good chance that the vast majority of MGM’s films and series will make it to Prime Video after they’ve been played in darkrooms and after reaching current agreements with other platforms for that content.
