Monkey Island: the sequel expected this year by the creator of the saga

A new game, Monkey Island, is coming out this year. “Return to Monkey Island”will be the pure creation of Ron Gilbert.

One of the best video game licenses of all time will return during 2022. Even better, the project features some of the famous people behind this franchise. Return to Monkey Island is a game by Ron Gilbert, who conceived and developed the first installment of this iconic point-and-click adventure comedy in the late 1980s.

Ron Gilbert wrote and directed the original game The Secret of Monkey Island. He also directed, developed and designed the sequel Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. He left Lucasfilm Games shortly after the opus saw the light of day, but he was featured in the credits of Tales of Monkey Island released in 2009. So Ron Gilbert is back in business, so to speak, and is best known in the saga along with fellow Monkey Island veteran Dave Grossman.

Return to Monkey Island is in development at Ron Gilbert’s studio, Terrible Toybox. The latter is working on this opus with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games. And if the teaser video description posted by Devolver is to be believed, it’s a “long-awaited sequel”to the first two games.

In these few seconds of video, we also learn that Michael Land, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian, so many names that have already worked on previous titles, will be present in this new opus to rule the entire music. Meanwhile, Dominique Armato will reprise his role as Guybrush Threepwood. In other words, we must find not only the perfect Monkey Island universe, but also the same sounds and voices.

Ron Gilbert tried unsuccessfully for years to regain the rights to Monkey Island (and Maniac Mansion) from Disney-owned Lucasfilm Games. Still, it’s nice to see him and so many other franchise veterans on Monkey Island.

Either way, this adds another game to the long list of 2022 games. And there is no doubt that this “Return to Monkey Island”will steal the priority from many AAAs young and old who grew up on the first works.
