Lightweight Linux laptop System76 updated to focus on battery life

System76 has updated its take on thin and light Linux laptops, the company said Tuesday, as seen by Tom’s Hardware. The updated 14-inch Lemur Pro, like its predecessors, prioritizes longer battery life, with the latest model claiming up to 14 hours of use.

System76 didn’t reveal how it tested the laptop’s battery life (we asked and will update this article if we get a response). But the Lemur Pro has a proven track record for its long battery life. In our 2020 Lemur Pro review, when the machine was offered with an Intel Core i7-10510U processor, it lasted at least 1 hour longer than any other laptop we tested while playing “10 hours of relaxing ocean scenery “» BBC in 1080p. and maximum brightness.

It was clear that System76 had tuned the machine more for battery life than performance.

The 2022 Lemur Pro can be configured with the i7-1255U processor, part of Intel’s U-series, designed for machines that care more about energy efficiency. In particular, the i7-1255U has two high-performance P cores (1.7-4.7GHz), eight efficient E cores (1.2-3.5GHz), 12 threads, and 12MB of cache. For a quick comparison, the larger (15″or 17″Gazelle laptop from System76, which includes an Nvidia RTX 3060 laptop graphics card, has a six P-core i7-1200H (2.3-4.7GHz), eight E-cores (1.7-3.5 GHz), 20 threads and 24 MB cache.

But the Lemur Pro has more to do with battery life and portability, as evidenced by its 2.54-pound weight and 0.65-inch thickness.

It can also be configured with up to 40GB dual-channel DDR4-3200 RAM (8GB + 32GB) and 4TB of storage available in two M.2 slots (up to one PCIe 4.0 and one PCIe 3.0).

Other specs include a 1920 x 1080 resolution display, 1080p webcam, two USB-A ports, one Thunderbolt 4 port and a Micro SD card reader, and the ability to run Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS.

The laptop firmware uses the Coreboot open source firmware platform, and the embedded controller firmware is also open source.

System76’s Lemur Pro starts at $1,150.
