Electric vehicle specialist Rivian is reportedly working on an electric two-wheeler. A key project on the path to profitability?

Electric vehicle startup Rivian is working on an electric two-wheeler. CEO RJ Scaringe announced the existence of this project to employees during a big meeting hosted by the company, according to a Bloomberg report. Notably, the startup has a “small group”of engineers who are working on a two-wheeler.

Bloomberg couldn’t confirm if RJ Scaringe was referring to a motorcycle or an e-bike, but the paper says Rivian has various patents on bike parts and designs. R.J. Scaringe has said in the past that Rivian wants to eventually enter the micromobility market. Rivian declined to comment on this topic.

However, this news about Rivian’s electric two-wheeler project comes the same week that a wave of layoffs was announced that affected 6% of her pay. These breaches of contract are the second major restructuring undertaken by Rivian in less than a year. The company then explained that the initiative was intended to refocus the production of its R1T and R1S electric vehicles and ultimately put Rivian on a path to long-term profitability. R. J. Scaringe also allegedly told his employees that Rivian wanted to do too much at once.

A key project on the path to profitability?

Trying to break into the electric two-wheeler market when the company isn’t yet profitable may not make much sense, but there’s a reason behind Rivian’s strategy. Even before the pandemic, the bike market was growing, especially with the advent of electric bikes. Sales of electric two-wheelers even easily surpassed sales of electric vehicles and trucks. This is not surprising since these devices are cheaper to manufacture and therefore cheaper to buy for the general public. Then a bike might be all Rivian needs to turn a profit.
