AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro: Which One Is Better?

Apple announced the new AirPods Pro 2, successors to the AirPods Pro, during the Far Out event. AirPods Pro 2 comes with new features that make it more attractive.

However, if you’re considering getting a new pair of AirPods Pro, you might be confused between AirPods Pro 2 and older AirPods Pro. If so, I have prepared a detailed comparison between the two to help you make the best buying decision.

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro: Design

The size and shape of the AirPods Pro 2 is virtually unchanged from the AirPods Pro. However, there is a slight change in their weight. AirPods Pro 2 weighs 5.3 grams and AirPods Pro weighs 5.4 grams.

The only major change you’ll see in terms of design is the charging case. The AirPods Pro 2 case has a strap loop on the side so you can attach it to anything and carry it with you. In addition, the speaker grill on the bottom of the case will help you find it by playing sound through the Find My app. The new charging case has also been reduced in thickness.

The design of the AirPods Pro 2 legs has not changed, but they have received new touch controls. In addition to the existing AirPods Pro controls, you can now adjust the volume by swiping the stems of the AirPods Pro 2. Also, the dual optical sensor has been replaced with a new skin detection sensor in the AirPods Pro 2 arms, which you can also see on the third generation AirPods, but not on first generation AirPods Pro.

Another change has to do with the silicone ear tips. You get an extra pair of XS silicone eartips for a better fit.

In terms of features, the new AirPods Pro 2 come with the new H2 chipset. This improves sound quality over the previous generation. AirPods Pro 2 also supports the Personalized Spatial Sound feature introduced in iOS 16. It maps your ears and provides the best head tracking for you.

The first generation AirPods Pro have active noise cancellation, its largest USP. The newer AirPods Pro 2 can cancel out twice as much noise as the latest AirPods Pro. The latest AirPods Pro 2 uses Bluetooth 5.3 technology compared to Bluetooth 5.0 in all previous AirPods.

Also improved accuracy for Find My as there is a U1 chip inside the case. In addition, the new AirPods Pro 2 feature adaptive transparency, which switches between transparency mode and noise cancellation depending on your situation. Plus, you get features like adaptive EQ, auto-switching, Live Listen, and more that are also available on AirPods Pro.

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro: Sound quality

Sound quality in the new 2nd generation AirPods Pro is enhanced with the new H2 chip, enhanced active noise cancellation, personalized spatial audio, adaptive transparency, and Bluetooth 5.3.

While I have explained the latest features above, the H2 chip comes with a low distortion driver and a new dedicated amplifier to deliver deeper bass and better treble. So I can say that the sound quality in the AirPods Pro 2 is slightly better than its predecessor.

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro: Battery life

According to Apple, AirPods Pro 2 will last 6 hours on a single charge and 30 hours of listening time with a MagSafe charging case. This is 1.5 hours more for AirPods and 6 hours more for the charging case compared to the previous generation.

You can charge second generation AirPods Pro 2 with MagSafe accessories. If you opt for wired charging, it will still have a Lightning port instead of USB Type-C, contrary to many’s expectations.

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro: Prices

The new AirPods Pro (2nd generation) are available for $250, but you can pre-order them now. Fortunately, the price remains the same as the debut price of the previous generation AirPods Pro.

However, the AirPods Pro are no longer for sale on Apple’s website but are still available from third party retailers for around $200 (or less in some cases).

Which AirPods Pro to choose?

The $50 price difference over the first generation AirPods Pro is justified for the new AirPods Pro. You get the latest H2 chip, improved touch controls, audio, enhanced spatial audio, and more.

I can make any comments about sound or call quality without even touching it. However, I expect not to get disappointing results. Keep an eye on this space as I will soon update information on the same.

In conclusion, if you’re planning on getting the new AirPods Pro and you’ve got the budget, go ahead and enjoy the new features. However, if you’re planning on saving an extra $50, you can get the previous generation AirPods Pro for $200 or less.
