Amazon starts delivering e-bikes in London
Amazon ramps up deliveries of electric vehicles to London. The giant is ramping up the number of electric bikes and walk-in deliveries.
Amazon is the first in the UK to deliver parcels by electric bike and on foot. The e-commerce giant is pursuing its climate protection goals. The company opened a dedicated micromobility center in central London. She explains that walkers and e-bikes will make over a million deliveries a year from downtown Hackney. These trips will replace thousands of regular transport deliveries.
Amazon expands deliveries of electric vehicles to London
At first, electric bikes and hand-operated couriers will serve more than one-tenth of the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ). E-bikes and all-electric vehicles are exempt from London Congestion Fees and ULEZ taxes, allowing Amazon and its delivery partners to avoid these fees.
Amazon plans to open more e-bike delivery centers across the UK in the coming months. The American giant already has more than 1,000 electric delivery vans on the country’s roads. A few months ago, the company added five all-electric trucks to its fleet in the UK to replace combustion engine trucks.
Giant multiplies e-bikes and pedestrian deliveries
This isn’t the first time Amazon has used electric bikes for delivery. Euronews specifies that they are already in use in five cities in France and seven metropolitan areas in Germany. The American company also uses electric scooters in Italy and Spain. Last November, two-thirds of deliveries in Paris were made with electric bicycles, pedestrian delivery trucks and electric vehicles.
Through its Shipment Zero project, Amazon aims to ship 50% of its packages carbon-neutral by 2030. The company hopes to become fully carbon neutral by 2040 as part of its commitment to climate protection.
The American giant also hopes to be able to fully switch to renewable energy by 2025. of the year. Amazon has 18 solar projects in the UK and is working to double that number by 2024.
