Android 13 Go Edition brings Material You to entry-level devices. The first devices are expected to appear next year.

The Google Material You interface has been available since Android 12, but you may not know if you bought a smartphone equipped with the Go Edition of the American giant’s operating system. Luckily, the latter is finally bringing this new aesthetic to entry-level devices. Android 13 Go Edition brings Material You to these simpler devices for the first time, including a color theme that reflects your wallpaper as well as a more polished overall look.

It should also be easier to keep your phone up to date. Android 13 Go Edition adds updates to the Google Play system, which, just like on the “full”platform, help ensure that the most important patches are installed without waiting for your device manufacturer to enter this code. This, of course, should allow you to fix security vulnerabilities faster, as well as keep your device up to date without taking up too much space in the often limited storage of entry-level smartphones.

This new version of Go also adds the Discover feature, allowing you to open a list of news and other content. There are also some more subtle improvements brought by Android 13, including notification permissions and per-app language settings.

The first devices are expected to go on sale next year.

The first smartphones equipped with Android 13 Go Edition should not go on sale until 2023. At the same time, Google points out that this launch is more a sign of a Go extension than a real technical improvement. There are currently over 250 million Android Go devices in circulation. While this number pales in comparison to the 3 billion active devices reported during I/O 2022, it does suggest that the concept of a highly optimized and more accessible Android OS should continue.
