Android 13 lets you opt out of notifications when you install an app

Android 13 finally lets you, like Apple, opt out of app notifications when you install it. Exercise.

If your Android phone is constantly on Silent or Do Not Disturb, chances are you’re getting tons of notifications every day, most of which you don’t even care about. It can be frustrating, distracting, inconvenient for your productivity, and even dangerous for your mental health. Fortunately, Google is following in Apple’s footsteps and now allows you to accept or not receive notifications when you install a new app. You must refuse.

Change in notification management in Android 13

Whereas previous versions of Android allowed you to turn off notifications from the app’s settings, with this new feature in Android 13, the operation becomes much easier and more accessible as it is installed directly. You may say to yourself “another problem installing the app”, yes, but it’s another small step towards big results.

This notification permission is a new default feature on all Android 13 devices, you don’t need to enable anything to use it. When you install the app, you will see a window asking if you want to enable notifications. Click “Allow”to enable them, or “Deny”to disable them. It is so simple.

If it is fashionable to deactivate them, there are of course a few exceptions. For example, for a messaging app, you’ll want to be notified when a new message arrives. The same goes for your banking, health or productivity apps.

With fewer notifications, your life will be much better

In any case, not all notifications are useful. This often makes apps look desperate for your attention, sending you tons of notifications that drown out the most important ones. By making them silent for most of your applications, you will make your life much easier and less likely to miss the really important ones.

If you’ve already decided to allow notifications for an app and are reconsidering your decision, it can be changed by going to the app’s settings, often via Settings > Notifications > App Settings. Some manufacturers are changing labels, looking for “notifications”. You can also press and hold a notification in the notification bar to open the quick settings menu where you can change the behavior and permissions for that particular app.

Try not to authorize them when installing the application, even if you later realize that you really need them. Your smartphone will become less distracting and your daily life will be better.
