Apple no longer replaces the entire iPad mini 6 just to replace the battery

Replacing the battery can be risky, at least for the iPad. Repair shops and seasoned DIYers know this, and Apple seemed to recognize this, usually offering customers looking for battery replacements a brand new iPad instead. Soon, with at least one model, Apple and its repair people may start actually replacing the iPad’s battery instead of sending it off to air for repair.

A MacRumors report claims that Apple is issuing a new policy for the iPad mini 6 (i.e. the 2021 iPad mini) allowing repair centers (where devices are sent for more thorough service) to replace the battery only, rather than providing a Whole Unit Replacement (WUR) from existing ones. or refurbished stock. MacRumors states that “other iPads may arrive in the coming weeks and months,”without giving specifics.

Replacing the battery on an iPad requires removing the screen, and on almost all of them, it’s difficult. Apple’s proprietary repair tools, tailored to each device, may be easier to use than using hand tools at home. But there is an inevitable physical problem associated with the need to apply strong suction or loose force to a long, wide and thin display. The sixth generation mini iPad, being the smallest of them all, probably represents the device with the highest screen removal success rate.

iPad repairs are so onerous that some non-Apple licensed repair shops include the cost of screen replacement in battery replacement quotes on larger iPads like the iPad Pro to avoid the tedious process or just assume some breakdown.

For customers, getting a replacement iPad can sometimes be a small blessing, as scratches, dents, or other imperfections that aren’t noticeable at first glance will be fixed by Apple’s supply chain. This is contrary to the process of restoring a full backup and re-entering dozens or hundreds of apps simply because you need a new battery.

Apple does not currently offer iPad repair tools in the self-service store. Apple usually charges $99 plus tax and about $7 shipping to have an iPad replaced by mail to a service center. iPad battery replacement may be covered under AppleCare coverage, but only if the device’s battery level is below 80 percent or other battery problems can be demonstrated.
