Apple expands self-service program for MacBook M1
Starting tomorrow, Apple will begin providing repair manuals, parts, and tools for US customers to help them repair their MacBook Air and MacBook Pro M1 laptops. M2-based Macs will not be supported at the time, but Apple said the program will be rolled out to other Mac models “later this year.”
In April, Apple launched a self-service store with repair guides and the ability to order tools and parts for the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 13 line, and the latest iPhone SE.
Starting tomorrow, the store will offer the same services to M1 MacBook Air and Pro owners, including the same parts available at the Apple Store and Authorized Service Providers, according to Apple’s announcement.
“Macbook Air and MacBook Pro Self Repair offers more than a dozen different types of repairs for each model, including display, top case with battery, and trackpad, and more,” Apple said.
In addition to selling MacBook repair parts and tools, the Apple Repair Store also allows customers to rent repair kits for a week for $49.
In addition, Apple will accept unwanted parts from the MacBook M1 for repair and recycling, and customers will receive credit “in many cases,”the tech giant said.
Apple today also confirmed its promise to expand the iPhone self-repair program to customers in Europe later this year and then to other regions.
Apple’s expansion of the program shows greater acceptance of repairability by a company that has been unwilling to repair devices itself for years. This comes as the industry sees increased demand and even legislation regarding the right to repair. However, right-to-repair activists such as iFixit have criticized Apple’s program for requiring a serial number that could prevent the use of replacement parts.
