Association asks Meta to allow Facebook users to add multiple love partners
The organization is asking for the ability to identify all of their romantic partners on their Facebook profile so as not to further marginalize ethical non-monogamy.
Facebook is one of the most popular social networks on the planet with several billion users. In fact, the platform should best represent modern society in all its many facets. This also seems to happen when representing users’ romantic relationships.
The organization is asking for permission to identify all of their romantic partners on their Facebook profile.
Today, the association is asking Meta to allow Facebook users to list more than one romantic partner on their profile page. The organization for polyamory and ethical non-monogamy (OPEN) sent the American giant a letter a few days ago saying that the current design of the relationship status feature offered on Facebook is “restrictive”for people who are ethical. non-monogamy. The organization is asking Meta to offer users the ability to add all love partners.
“At best, this restriction perpetuates the erasure and marginalization of non-monogamous relationships; at worst, this is detrimental to non-monogamous users by perpetuating social stigma regarding the validity and authenticity of their relationship,” OPEN said in a statement.
In order not to marginalize ethical non-monogamy
A Meta spokesperson told The New York Times that Menlo Park is currently reviewing the request and notes that Facebook already allows users to indicate on their profile that they are in an “open relationship”with one or more people. The timing for this request may seem strange given the decline in daily users, but it corresponds to an increase in the number of people who happen to be in non-monogamous relationships. According to OPEN, about 4-5% of American adults practice ethical non-monogamy.
No one knows if Facebook will decide to grant this request and allow the explicit identification of its many romantic partners, but this further heightens the importance of reflecting all aspects of our society.
