Battlefield 2042 could get free modes soon

According to journalist and industry insider Tom Henderson, EA may want to make parts of Battlefield 2042 free to play. This is based on speculation that suggests EA isn’t exactly thrilled with the Battlefield 2042 numbers that have surfaced since launch.

In a video on his Youtube channel, Tom explains that EA is looking at various ways to recover from a somewhat disappointing launch. This includes looking at game modes like Portal and turning parts of it into a free to play game.

Portal, developed by Ripple Effect Studios, is a game mode in Battlefield 2042 that gives players access to select maps from previous Battlefield games and allows them to create their own matches. While EA hasn’t officially confirmed this free-to-play direction, it may not be that far off.

EA may be considering Portal as a free-to-play mode in Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 didn’t quite live up to the overwhelming success that EA, DICE, and even fans were hoping for, but it’s not all bad. We’ve touched on many of the game’s highlights in our review of the game, but they’re no doubt stuck under the rubble of the game’s many issues, including bugs and rough progression.

The game had a hard time attracting players, as even the new Hazard Zone game mode was not a big success either. Perhaps it’s time for EA to consider its options to move the game into a free-to-play Warzone direction.

The rival Call of Duty franchise has essentially received a significant boost with its free-to-play Warzone component, which has pretty much become a game in its own right now. That’s why it makes sense for EA to consider going down that route and testing the water in the free-to-play mode.
