Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will use Blizzard’s SMS Protect system
To play Modern Warfare II, you will definitely have to go through SMS Protect, news that not all players are happy about.
When the next installment of the iconic Call of Duty license arrives on October 28, fans will need to link a phone number to their Battle.net account in order to use it. “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, new Overwatch 2 accounts, and new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number,” reads a recently updated help page found by PC Gamer.
To play Modern Warfare II, you will definitely have to go through SMS Protect
The news comes after a week of heated debate over SMS Protect, the telephony system used in Overwatch 2 and soon Modern Warfare II. After a difficult launch that included a DDoS attack preventing many players from playing Overwatch 2 on launch day, Blizzard announced that they will be reducing the need for a phone number.
News that does not please all players
The studio initially stated that all players must link a phone number to their Battle.net account. This now only applies to new Overwatch players. This system is cringing because “some prepaid”don’t work with SMS Protect. Until Friday, players on a data plan from a carrier such as Cricket Wireless might find they couldn’t play.
At the time of this writing, no one knows if all Warzone 2.0 players need to bind a phone number in order to play when the title goes live on November 16th. As of 2020, Infinity Ward requires all free-to-play Warzone players on PC to use a two-factor authentication process. Activision Blizzard is yet to clarify or comment on this PC Gamer discovery.
