The video game industry has changed a lot in recent years. While AAA titles are always eagerly awaited by fans and the trade press, their arrival is rarely easy and their release is often eventful. Many of the mainstream games suffer from bugs and other launch delays. Cyberpunk 2077 could be the latest fiasco. A fiasco that is expensive or not very expensive for a developer today, CD Projekt Red.

CD Projekt Red goes to box office to settle lawsuit

According to The Verge, CD Projekt Red would have agreed to pay an amount of $1,850,000 to settle a lawsuit initiated by investors following the disastrous commercial launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Finally, a relatively small amount compared to the $316 million development budget and especially compared to the fact that the game was a huge box when it was released, with no less than 8 million pre-orders. This agreement is only preliminary, it has not yet been approved by the court.

This lawsuit was actually a combination of four separate actions initiated by investors who felt they had been misled by the company about its financial position. However, the report does not elaborate on why the amount of this agreement is relatively small. According to Bloomberg, CD Projekt Red’s stock has fallen 54% since the game’s release, and analysts have significantly lowered their Cyberpunk 2077 sales forecast.

And on top of that, CD Projekt Red has had to postpone the long-awaited launch of next-gen updates for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, originally scheduled for late this 2021, to the first quarter of 2022. “We apologize. for a longer wait than expected, but we wanted to get it right,” the company said. The studio launched the Cyberpunk DLC last August, but only added a few cosmetic items and a car.
