Crystal Dynamic confirms a new Tomb Raider game is in development and will use the recently released Unreal Engine 5
Unreal Engine 5 has been the talk of the town for some time now, and Epic officially made the engine available to all developers and studios at yesterday’s State of Unreal. The event also featured an announcement from Crystal Dynamics confirming the development of a new Tomb Raider game built on UE5.
Crystal Dynamics previously worked on the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, which includes the 2013 game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The reboot trilogy received generally positive reviews, with all three games also being commercial successes.
The studio recently worked on Marvel’s Avengers, a live service game that has gotten better over time. UE5 opens up all sorts of possibilities for studios, and it will be interesting to see how Crystal Dynamics harnesses the power of the new engine.
Unreal Engine 5 is now available to all developers and studios
Since the first technology showcase, UE5 has consistently been one of the most exciting aspects of next-gen gaming, and experiences like The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience have only fueled the flames of excitement. State of Unreal also featured a tech presentation from The Coalition, the studio behind Gears of War Games.
The Cave tech demo showcased UE5’s ability to render assets and polygons in real time, as well as metahumans, the technology used to create human characters in UE5.
Studios using Unreal Engine 5
Several studios have already confirmed their use of UE5, including the likes of CD Projekt Red, who will be using Unreal Engine 5 to develop the next Witcher game. Other major studios using UE5 include Obsidian, Ninja Theory, PlayStation Studios, and Xbox Studios.
In addition, Epic has also released a sample of The Matrix Awakens City for PC for free (link here), which means that now PC players will also be able to experience the city build on UE5. To play City Sample, players need to download Unreal Engine 5 and then City Sample itself.
