Riot MMO release date and everything you need to know (2023)

Want to know the release date for Riot’s next MMO? Ever since Executive Producer Greg Street announced the MMORPG, LOL fans have been restless. Set in the world of Runeterra, this Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game will expand the world of LoL. But when will this long-awaited MMO come out? Do we have a release date? Here’s everything you need to know about the League Of Legends MMO release date.

Riot MMO (League of Legends) release date

Unfortunately, at the moment the release date of the Riot MMO is unknown. But we can expect it to be released towards the end of 2024 or early 2025. This upcoming LoL MMORPG was first announced by Greg Street in 2020. It is currently at an early stage of development and is expected to be released in the distant future.

Riot Games has hired several people for various roles for this highly anticipated MMO. But it’s safe to say that we’ll have to wait a long time before it comes out. Why? Because MMOs can take many years before they are developed and ready for release. MMORPG games tend to be more risky than games in other genres.

Will the Riot MMORPG be canon?

Yes, the upcoming Riot MMO has been confirmed as canonical for League of Legends. When asked if the game would be canon, Greg Street responded on Twitter : “Think of it this way. If we succeed and millions of players play for hundreds of hours and spend that much time discussing stories and characters with their friends and online, it will become a knowledge hub. MMOs have a way to do this.”

Street also shared that the strategy should now be more cohesive rather than focusing on decentralization. As such, the League of Legends writers, storytellers, and directors team will work closely with the Riot MMO team.

Who is developing the Riot MMO?

Hey internet. Thanks for all the support over the past few months while I was at afk

I’m back and have some big news to share: I’ve decided to step down from my position at Riot Games.

— Greg Street (@Ghostcrawler) March 7, 2023

Greg Street has led the development of Riot’s MMORPG since its announcement. But due to a combination of personal and professional considerations, Greg decided to step down from his position, sharing it on Twitter. In addition to this, Greg also shared, “I said from the start that making a League of Legends MMO worthy of all of you will be a long journey.”He also stated that the MMO is in good hands and he plans to continue developing the game.

Riot Game co-founder Mark Merrill shared that the road to the finish line will be a long one. He tweeted that the MMO is in early development and shared that Greg had an amazing first leg on an incredible journey. However, Merrill did not reveal who would replace Greg as executive producer. He ended the Twitter thread by posting a link to the company’s recruitment asking them to join the development of the game.

We will update this section as more information becomes available.

Will Riot’s LOL MMO be free?

Since all Riot games have been free-to-play so far, it’s safe to say that Riot MMOs will be free to play. Since it is associated and canonized with Legends of League, it will most likely be free. However, since supporting any MMO is expensive, we can expect Riot’s MMORPG to be paid as well. Developers can make in-game purchases for cosmetics and characters such as Lost Ark. Or the MMO team might decide to take a Diablo 4-inspired approach.

But looking at the Riot Games model so far, the upcoming LOL MMO will most likely be free to play. Although for confirmation we will have to wait until the developers spill the beans and reveal more information.

Riot MMO trailers
