Donald Trump will soon recover his Facebook and Instagram accounts, the Meta decided.
More than two years after initiating a “until further notice”ban on former US President Donald Trump’s Facebook, the Meta has decided to reinstate his account. In a press release, the American giant explains that Donald Trump will be able to recover his Facebook and Instagram accounts “in the coming weeks,”but clarifies that there are “new precautions to prevent repeat offences.”
Donald Trump will soon restore his Facebook and Instagram accounts.
The move comes after the Trump campaign pushed Facebook to reactivate its social media account ahead of the upcoming presidential primaries. Donald Trump was stripped of Facebook following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 after publicly thanking the protesters. Meta’s management, which moved quickly from a 24-hour ban to a “permanent”suspension, has been widely criticized, including from the Supervisory Board. The latter rebuked him for not following his own rules and trying to “run away from his duties”. The Meta then reversed their decision, stating that the exile would be in place for at least two years. Finally, the company confirmed that Donald Trump could return to Facebook, but Nick Clegg,
Nick Clegg today announces that Donald Trump and other public figures whose accounts have been reinstated after being suspended “due to civil disobedience”face a further suspension of at least one month in the event of a repeat violation. Meta will also take steps to restrict access to Donald Trump’s messages if they promote “the same risk that led to January 6, such as content that delegitimizes the upcoming election or is linked to QAnon.”While Meta cannot remove these messages entirely, it also explains that the company will consider removing the share button and blocking them from its advertising and recommender systems.
That’s what Meta decided.
The Meta’s decision comes months after Elon Musk also reinstated the former president’s Twitter account. According to a recent report from Rolling Stone, Donald Trump is not yet on this platform, but is indeed preparing his comeback. If the former American president favored Twitter, his Facebook follower base was also very important during his previous campaigns.
Donald Trump’s suspension also marked the first major test for the Meta Review Board, which the company has just formed to manage the moderation of problematic content and make decisions about its usage rules. In a recent statement, the council said it had “no role”in the company’s decision to reinstate Donald Trump’s account, but plans to “publish a full analysis of the matter in a future quarterly transparency report.”
