Final Fantasy 16: Nervous Devil May Cry Gameplay
Japanese publisher Square Enix presents an update on the real-time combat of Final Fantasy 16 with a detailed walkthrough.
To create the ultimate real-time action game with Final Fantasy 16 on PS5, producer Naoki Yoshida has teamed up with Ryota Suzuki, former head of Capcom’s combat department for licenses such as Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter, Dragon’s Dogma, Onimusha or even Street Fighter.
The FF16 combat system can be divided into two different types of combat. First, the fights where the player controls Clive Rosfield and uses the abilities of the different Akons he encounters during his journey. And the second type of combat we have is large-scale battles where Clive controls Akon to take on another Akon. Not only are these encounters different from normal fights, but they are original and unique events created from the ground up to be specific to each fight.
Thanks to Final Fantasy XVI’s massive Akon battles, real-time combat, and bottomless lore, our hands-on report is filled with new gameplay details.

While Final Fantasy 7 Remake has already paved the way for faster, more jittery RPG gameplay, combat in Final Fantasy 16 will be very jittery and animated, and at times especially brutal or even bloody:
Boss battles, these epic Akon vs. Akon fights are built from the ground up to be unique for each battle. They are not reused in the game, they are used only once, and we hope to give players a unique and exciting experience for each of the battles. There are many types, ranging from heavy weight feel like a professional wrestling match to fights more like 3D shooting or intense action.
Clive Rosfield won’t be traveling alone in Final Fantasy 16
If players follow the adventures of Clive Rosfield, whose intimate motives lead him on the path of revenge, Final Fantasy 16 will also highlight other characters who will join the protagonist:
Clive will be able to fight in groups. However, since, again, with our game design, we wanted players to be able to focus on real-time combat, the party members will be completely controlled by the AI. However, in addition to fighting, the members of the troupe talk to each other a lot throughout the game, and bring a lot to the story. While the other party members are often only temporarily with Clive and are completely controlled by the AI, Clive’s loyal dog, Torgal, is almost always with Clive, no matter who is with him. Additionally, Clive can also give Torgal simple commands, as you see here, to influence how he fights in combat. Of course, for players who find it too difficult,
Naoki Yoshida explains what to expect from Akon’s abilities:
As the game progresses, Clive will have the opportunity to learn the exciting new abilities of the Akons that he encounters throughout the story. These can be used in addition to Clive’s default abilities. They can be purchased and upgraded with Ability Points earned by leveling up, and can be used to suit each player’s play style. Of course, for those who can’t decide, there is a feature that automatically acquires recommended abilities, as well as a repurposing option that allows players to repurpose their build at any time, for free.
