Apple’s long-talked-about mixed reality headset may have some very good cards up its sleeve. Sources from The Information claim that the device will have a retinal scanning system for authentication and payments. This will allow you to buy apps and even make it easier to multi-user. Apple obviously didn’t comment, but the Cupertino-based company would have bought SensoMotorics from the eyewear maker in 2017 with exactly that idea. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated in 2021 that Primax will provide eye tracking modules that will support iris detection.

The headset may also have some advantages over the recently announced Meta Quest Pro. Two of the 14 cameras that will be on board will track your feet, giving you an advantage in tracking your entire body compared to the 10 cameras on the Meta’s headset (none of which are focused on the feet). The use of aluminium, fabric and glass in these goggles should also allow the Quest Pro to weigh less than 450 grams.

Previous rumors have also suggested other premium features, including very high resolution screens, very detailed facial expression tracking, and even the ability to attach corrective lenses. The headset will be powered by the M2 chip in recent Macs, but may use a low enough refresh rate to extend battery life rather than visual realism.

Several leaks also point to a possible launch during 2023. The question is whether the finished product will be available. Several rumors have hinted at a $3,000 price tag. Sure, more features than the $1,500 Quest Pro, but the price isn’t the same. This price can seriously limit the clientele of this helmet.
