Gears of War: action and animated series commissioned by Netflix

Netflix announces a Gears of War live-action movie as well as an adult animated series.

Netflix never stops adapting video games, right or wrong, it obviously depends on the production, but at least we can say that the streaming platform doesn’t intend to stop there. One of the most famous Xbox licenses will soon join the long list. The service is teaming up with developer The Coalition to create a Gears of War feature film. No details, synopsis or release date yet, but Netflix will also release an adult animated series and hints at “extra stories”.

Netflix Announces Gears of War Live Movie

The series revolves around the locust, an aggressive species that has nearly wiped out human civilization. The original Gears of War trilogy centered on veteran Marcus Fenix, but later games and other spin-offs feature his son JD, his great friend and ally Baird, and rebel-turned-soldier Keith.

The timing is perfect. The coalition has not released a new game for a long time. The Netflix production gives the Microsoft-owned studio the opportunity to talk about Gears of War while sparking interest in the franchise with fans who have many memories of the Locust. It’s also part of the Redmond-based company’s response to Sony’s big-screen and small-screen ambitions, specifically the Horizon and God of War series, as well as movies like Uncharted.

as well as an animated series for adults

The question, as always, will be whether the license translates well into the linear format that cinema is. There have already been some big hits with video game adaptations such as the League of Legends series, but these projects don’t usually have the best reputation. Even the Halo adaptation received mixed reactions. It’s still too early to tell how Gears of War will be received, but it’s clear that expectations are already very high. And a lot of problems for the studios involved.
