Google Chrome: You can adjust the volume of each tab

An extension to control the sound level of each Google Chrome tab. Volume Master is very efficient and easy to use.

When watching a relaxing YouTube video, the last thing you want is an autoplay video at high volume or a notification from another tab that knocks you out of your chair. If muting all tabs in the background isn’t the best option for you, you can try Volume Master, a Chrome extension that lets you control the audio level of each tab.

While it is possible to set a custom volume for each open app on Windows and Mac, no such tools exist for tabs in your browser. Volume Master fills this gap.

This extension is easy to use: once installed, pin it to the Chrome toolbar for quick access by clicking the extension icon in the toolbar and then the pin icon next to Volume Master. Click the Volume Master icon to set the volume level from 0 to 600% for each tab. The extension also offers a list of all the tabs that are currently playing audio, so you can easily switch to them with a single click.

After selecting the desired tab, press Volume Master again and adjust the volume level. You will have to repeat this for each tab, but the extension remembers your settings until you close the tab.

Volume Master works with tabs that actively play audio, such as Spotify, Netflix, and YouTube, as well as tabs that send occasional alerts (Gmail, WhatsApp, etc.). The Volume Master icon shows the set volume level, which is convenient.

While Volume Master does its job very well, there are some downsides to be aware of. An extension, for example, cannot remember your settings after you close a tab. If you accidentally close your Gmail tab, you’ll need to reset your volume.

The extension then needs access to all your tabs and their data in order to work. Understandable given the nature of Volume Master’s functionality, but privacy-conscious users may opt out.

Finally, Volume Master does not allow you to enjoy full screen mode. If you click the full screen button on the video, it will expand to the maximum in the browser window, but you will still see the toolbar and tabs at the top.

If you want to try Volume Master, know that the extension is compatible with all Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge. If you’re using Firefox, 600% audio volume is a good alternative.
