Google is working on a feature to share files between your devices

Google is working on sharing between its devices. Self Share will be very similar to AirDrop.

If you want to share a file from one of your devices to another and you’re in the Apple ecosystem, it’s very easy, just use AirDrop from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac and vice versa. On Google platforms like Android or Chrome OS, the operation is a bit more subtle, as you need to send the file to the cloud, email it to yourself, or connect your device directly to your computer. But that may change soon.

Google is working on sharing between its devices

Google has tried in the past to create its own version of AirDrop, a solution called Nearby Share, but it doesn’t work like AirDrop, and Mountain View intends to change all that. If the discovery in Chrome Gerrit is to be believed, it would appear that Google is currently working on a significant update to Nearby Share that will even see this functionality expanded with a feature called “Self Share”.

So Self Share will be very similar to AirDrop.

And, as the name suggests, the goal is to make it easy for users to share files between their own devices. This means that if you’re on a device like a Chromebook, you’ll be able to use this Self Share feature to send a file from your Chromebook to your Android smartphone. This feature will be part of the Neighborhood Sharing feature and should be available in the Neighborhood Sharing menu with an option that will appear under Send to Your Devices.

At this stage, it’s impossible to know when this feature will be available to all users, but since it’s currently in Chrome Gerrit, the next step is to integrate it into Chrome Canary before it goes public. A little more patience!
