Google to close free G Suite accounts

Google is closing old free G Suite accounts, you will have to pay for a Google Workspace account from May 1st.

Years ago, when young people might not have known, Google allowed its own domain name, which could be linked to various Google products and services. For example, instead of using an email address on gmail.com, you can use your own domain name and still use Gmail as your interface and platform of choice.

Indeed, this option was offered free of charge to users who did not want to pay for other additional features – although, obviously, you had to pay for a domain name. Google later canceled this offer, but those who were already eligible could continue using the service without worry. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end sometime. The American giant has just announced the end of those old G Suite accounts.

You will have to pay from May 1

According to the company’s official announcement, all free G Suite accounts will now be required to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription. This transition will take effect from May 1, 2022, and for those who haven’t responded by then, Google says it will “suspend”these accounts for 60 days. In other words, you will still be able to access your account, but some features will no longer be available unless you pay for this new subscription.

Under the current model, the subscription will cost €4.68 per month on the Business Starter offer with 30 GB of storage or €9.36 per month on the Business Standard (with 2 TB of storage). What used to be free is becoming paid, it’s a way of doing things we know all too well, especially today when subscription services proliferate at all costs.
