GeForce GPUs slow down after installing the Windows 11 2022 update

Some users of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards are experiencing serious performance issues after installing the Windows 11 2022 update (also known as Windows 11 22H2), which Microsoft released to the public earlier this week. As reported by Bleeping Computer, affected users experience stuttering, inconsistent frame rates, and slowdowns even on fast PCs with modern components.

Nvidia says the problem is caused by some new Windows graphics debugging features that were turned on by mistake.

The company has publicly acknowledged the issue and has released a new beta version of the GeForce Experience software suite that it says should fix it. This means that the issue is related to additional Nvidia software and not to the GeForce drivers themselves; if you installed the drivers without the GeForce Experience software, you may not have noticed the slowdown in the first place.

Mistakes like this are why Microsoft releases major Windows updates in stages, starting with a small group of PCs and moving on. The company learned this lesson early in the Windows as a Service era, when issues such as non-working webcams, data loss, and non-working apps arose early in the public process of rolling out major feature updates.
