If Half-Life: Alyx made you want to go back to its 2004 predecessor, now you can do it in VR. A few days ago, a group of fans called the Source VR Mod Team released Half-Life 2: VR Mod. If you own the original game, you can download and play this mod for free on Steam.

While the mod is currently in beta testing, it allows you to play Half-Life 2’s single-player campaign from start to finish. The Source VR Mod Team has incorporated many features from Half-Life: Alyx to provide a modern experience and make the game accessible to VR. For example, you can change weapons using the same selection system as in Valve’s 2020 game.

Lots of changes and additions

Other changes made for VR include the addition of additional laser vision, over-the-shoulder ammo storage, manual weapon reloading, and two-handed weapon holding. There’s even support for room-scale movement. The Source VR mod team explains that the project is still a work in progress, but that hasn’t stopped fans from diving into the game: the mod currently has an “extremely positive”rating out of 1,015 reviews.
