Horizon Forbidden West: Introducing the Cast

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Guerrilla Games present the protagonists of Horizon: Forbidden West.

Talented actors Ashly Burch (car hunter Aloy), Carrie-Anne Moss (mysterious and incomprehensible Tilda), John Hopkins (Erend, the cheerful warrior of Ozeram), John Macmillan (Varl, Aloy’s faithful friend), Lance Reddick (mysterious Silence).) and Noshir Dalal (Cotallo Tenact Warrior) discuss their roles in Horizon: Forbidden West, Guerrilla Games’ upcoming PS5 and PS4 exclusive.

  • Ashly Burch: “It’s great to play this role again. Aloy is such a rich and exciting character. Now she has to take on a new role, with new challenges, a new threat, and with everything she’s learned, her evolution as a character is very interesting. Aloy is taller, more muscular and stronger than me, but I feel like I know her well. It’s fun to be able to embody it in different contexts and see where its limits are.”
  • Carrie-Anne Moss: “I play a character that I find very interesting, he is a very complex person, and I really enjoyed playing him. She experienced tragic events when she was a child, but this loneliness, this sadness that came to her from childhood, affects her entire story. When you do stuff like that, you reveal at different times all the layers that go into it, and finding your truth and at the same time exploring it was really, really cool.”
  • John Hopkins: “Erend is such a hilarious but sometimes sad bum with a penchant for alcohol and violence who often belittles himself. But he actually has a really good background. Aloy completely saved Erend. After his sister died, he became a broken man and she gave him a reason to live. She constantly surprises him without stopping until, in the end, he follows her lead. I think if my character was really appreciated, it was because of my incredible acting talent and my huge charisma, and also, I think, because of his vulnerability. I think it’s a vulnerability of character. He’s quite funny, but he knows he’s far from perfect. I like it. I love it “
  • John Macmillan: “For Varl, I believe that the world without Aloy would be infinitely smaller, more boring. On many levels, his appearance in his life has taken him from black and white to an explosion of vibrant colors. He lost his sister and it’s not easy to live with, and I think he met it with great grace, which won him the sympathy of all the fans. He seems like a good guy, I think he’s the kind of guy you want to have on your side. It’s something really touching and rewarding to play the same character for years. I enjoyed finding him again and I’m really proud to be able to bring him to life and also take this journey of discovery with him.”
  • Lance Reddick: “I found the world of the game absolutely fascinating. Not gonna lie, the idea of having my face in the game sounded great to me. The acting of the character has many layers that are revealed as the story progresses rather than being revealed all at once, I don’t want to speak on behalf of all the actors but personally I think it’s really a dream come true. When we get links, we often don’t have context. The difficulty is that you have to rely more on the artistic director. What is useful is, of course, to bring the character to life. But there’s also the fact that I get to experience the story while acting, which is really great.”
  • Noshir Dalal: “Kotallo is a warrior from the Tenakt Sky Clan. He is an orphan trying to figure out who he is because his relationship with his own tribe is quite complicated. We will be able to see how he evolves and becomes himself during his adventures with Ela. What I especially liked was the mastery of the character’s movements. I didn’t want him to be just a big bully. I wanted him to be something like a panther, I wanted him to have a certain grace and a certain flexibility, because when he moves, he is both mesmerizing and frightening. I really can’t wait for people to find out about this and I hope they enjoy it as much as I do.”
