How to use automatic track detection on Apple Watch
Things to know before using Treadmill Detection on Apple Watch:
- This feature works on Apple Watch Series 4 or higher running watchOS 9.2.
- You must be on a standard 400m track recognized by World Athletics (IAAF).
- It is currently only available in Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, UK and US.
With watchOS 9.2, Apple has introduced a new feature designed to help fitness enthusiasts reach their fitness goals. This feature comes pre-installed and automatically records the user’s distance and pace while running on the track, eliminating the need to manually track your progress. This article is a detailed guide on how to use the Auto Track Detection feature on Apple Watch.
How to use treadmill detection on Apple Watch in watchOS 9.2
- Open the Workout app on your Apple Watch.
- Scroll down and tap “Outdoor Running”.
- You’ll get the option to select a lane if the wearable detects you’re on a track.
- Select the lane using the plus and minus buttons → select Confirm.
- Select the unit of measure (miles or meters) if this is your first track.
- Click Confirm.
Keep in mind that you will receive a warning if you leave the track without finishing your workout.
Also, if you change lanes, you must transfer it to your wearable by swiping right on the watch face → tapping lanes, where you must enter your new lane.
In addition, when you complete your running goal and step off the track, you’ll see a route map in your workout summary, including Apple’s statement about your lane-level accuracy. What’s more, if you have an Apple Watch Ultra, the data you receive will be more accurate because it uses dual-frequency GPS.
How to enable lap alert on Apple Watch
When you are on the verge of a lap, the lap alert feature will send you an alert with metrics such as distance, time, and pace. However, in order to use this feature, you must first enable it.
- Open the Workout app.
- Tap the three dots icon.
- Select Alerts → tap Lap Tracking.
- Turn on Lap Alert now.
What I personally like about this feature is that you don’t have to spend time calibrating it. Also, if your Apple Watch detects that you’ve arrived at a trail, it can switch to trail mode in the middle of a normal run.
