How to Transfer Your AppleCare Plan in a Few Easy Steps
Let’s face it. iPhones aren’t cheap, so investing in an AppleCare plan to avoid wasting money on costly repairs is a smart move. But if you’re planning to upgrade and sell or gift your old iPhone soon, you may be wondering if you can transfer your AppleCare plan to its new owner so they can enjoy the same peace of mind.
The short answer is yes, but it depends on some conditions. Read on to learn more about how to migrate your AppleCare plan and what it takes.
How to Transfer an AppleCare Plan to a New Owner
Transferring an AppleCare plan to a new owner requires a quick call to Apple Support. But before that, here are a few details you need to know before you jump on the phone:
- Get your AppleCare agreement number, your device serial number, and proof of AppleCare coverage by going to My Support.
- Sign in with your Apple ID → select your device → click View Verification of Coverage.
- Find the original sales receipt for the device. If you bought yours online, you should find it in your email.
- Get the details of the new owner (name, address, email address, phone number).
- Once you have all this information, you can call Apple Support. An AppleCare specialist will guide you through the transfer process.
Note. If you have a monthly subscription to an AppleCare plan, you won’t be able to transfer the plan to a new owner because the plan is linked to your Apple ID. Additionally, users in certain regions or countries may not be able to transfer their AppleCare plan to another owner.
Can you transfer your AppleCare plan to another device?
If you had a device upgrade, you may be wondering if you can simply transfer your AppleCare plan from your old device to your new device. Unfortunately, this is not possible because the AppleCare plan is tied to the device.
This is only possible if Apple provides you with a replacement device instead of repairing it. They will then automatically transfer your plan to the new device.
The workaround is to cancel, refund and get new coverage
If you had an upgrade and want your new device covered, you can cancel your existing AppleCare plan and get your new device covered using a refund instead.
You can get a full refund if you cancel your AppleCare subscription within 30 days of purchase. Please note that Apple will deduct the cost of any service they have already provided.
You can still get a refund even if you cancel your subscription after 30 days from the date you purchased the plan. The refund will be based on the coverage percentage of the unexpired plan minus the cost of any service they have already provided for your device.
Cancellation of your AppleCare plan depends on your payment method. If you paid in full, contact Apple Support with your plan agreement number, device serial number, and original sales receipt.
Cancel annual or monthly AppleCare subscription
If you have an annual or monthly subscription and want to cancel it, here’s what you need to do:
On your iPhone:
- Go to Settings → tap your name.
- Select Subscriptions. Tap your AppleCare subscription.
- Click “Cancel Subscription”.
On your Mac:
- Open and sign in to the App Store app.
- Click your name → go to “Account Settings”.
- Go to Subscriptions → click Manage.
- Find your AppleCare plan → click Change.
- Click Cancel Subscription.
After you canceled the AppleCare plan for your old iPhone, you can use your refund to purchase a plan for your new device. Here’s how to get an AppleCare plan for your iPhone, iPad, or Mac after purchase.
