The only way to kill demons is to burn them with a cross. When you first receive a cross, you may not be sure how to use it. Here’s what you should do when you encounter a demon:

1. Put on the cross by pressing I to open inventory. If you’ve added it to your bag, you can even pop it in quickly.
2. As soon as the demon rushes at you, attack him with a cross.
3. This will start to burn it and you will even hear them squeal.
4. It won’t kill him yet, the demon might fall for a while. But the demon still has a bit of a fight left.
5. You must attack the demon with a cross at least three times to completely defeat it.
